Trenching and backfilling is an effective method of increasing the amount of insulation over a pipe. The heat capacity of soil is significant and acts as a natural heat store.

Correct trench and backfill is a critical success factor for the pipeline stability and protection during its design life. Attention to a material's aging characteristics in burial conditions needs to be considered. In addition, incorrect backfill and compaction can cause backfill caving in and collapsing of pipe.
